  10.        Your copy of RoboInst requires a software license in order
  11.        to operate.  This chapter defines some important software
  12.        licensing terms, describes the basic procedure for
  13.        obtaining, installing, and testing a software license for
  14.        RoboInst, and lists addresses and phone numbers that you can
  15.        use to contact Silicon Graphics License Administration.
  16.  
  17.        For more information about software licenses, see the _F_L_E_X_l_m
  18.        _E_n_d _U_s_e_r _M_a_n_u_a_l, which provides detailed information on
  19.        using and administering software licenses.  It is included
  20.        in the system software documentation; the online version is
  21.        in the subsystem _l_i_c_e_n_s_e__e_o_e._b_o_o_k_s._F_l_e_x_L_M__E_U_M.

  23.        7.1  _A__F_e_w__D_e_f_i_n_i_t_i_o_n_s
  24.  
  25.        A _s_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _l_i_c_e_n_s_e is a collection of information that,
  26.        after installation, allows you to use a licensed software
  27.        product on one or more systems.  The software license
  28.        information includes the license type, the license
  29.        expiration date, a license password, system host name, and
  30.        host ID number (_l_m_h_o_s_t_i_d), and additional information
  31.        concerning the license and licensed software.  You can find
  32.        the host name using the command /sbin/uname -n, and the host
  33.        ID number using the command /usr/sbin/lmhostid.  The license
  34.        must be installed on the system that has the host name
  35.        included in the software license information.  If the host
  36.        name is ``ANY,'' the software license can be installed on
  37.        any system.

  39.        There are two types of software licenses, _n_o_d_e-_l_o_c_k_e_d and
  40.        _c_o_n_c_u_r_r_e_n_t, and two durations of software licenses,
  41.        _t_e_m_p_o_r_a_r_y and _p_e_r_m_a_n_e_n_t:
  42.  
  43.        node-locked  A node-locked license is installed on a
  44.                     particular system (node) and allows the
  45.                     licensed software to run on that system.
  46.  
  47.        concurrent   A concurrent license allows the licensed
  48.                     software to run on one or more systems in the
  49.                     network simultaneously.  The number of systems
  50.                     (nodes) allowed is included in the software
  51.                     license information.  The system on which a
  52.                     concurrent license is installed must be
  53.                     configured as a license server.  (See Chapter 1
  54.                     of the _F_L_E_X_l_m _E_n_d _U_s_e_r _M_a_n_u_a_l for more
  55.                     information about license servers.)

  57.        temporary    A temporary license allows you to use the
  58.                     licensed software for a short period, typically
  59.

  74.                     a week to several months.  The expiration date
  75.                     tells you the last date on which you can use
  76.                     the licensed software.  Temporary licenses are
  77.                     often shipped with software so that you can use
  78.                     the software before a permanent license is
  79.                     issued.

  81.        permanent    A permanent license allows you to use this
  82.                     release of the licensed software for a long
  83.                     time.  Permanent licenses are issued only for
  84.                     software that has been purchased.

  86.        7.2  _O_b_t_a_i_n_i_n_g__a_n_d__I_n_s_t_a_l_l_i_n_g__a__S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e__L_i_c_e_n_s_e

  88.        This section explains the procedure for obtaining and
  89.        installing a software license:  checking to see if you have
  90.        received software license information, determining if you
  91.        need to install a license, requesting software license
  92.        information if you need it, identifying the system on which
  93.        you will install the license, installing the software
  94.        license information, and verifying that the license is
  95.        working.

  97.          1.  Check to see if you have received software license
  98.              information.
  99.  
  100.              Software license information is distributed in several
  101.              ways:  on labels attached to a Software License
  102.              Registration card, on sheets of paper included with
  103.              the product, or by mail, FAX, electronic mail, or via
  104.              the World Wide Web.

  106.          2.  Determine if you need to install a software license.
  107.  
  108.              You may or may not need to install a software license
  109.              for RoboInst:
  110.  
  111.                 +o If you are simply updating your system to this
  112.                   release of RoboInst, you may not need to install
  113.                   a new license at this time; your already-
  114.                   installed license may continue to work.
  115.  
  116.                 +o If you have received both a temporary license and
  117.                   a permanent software license, install the
  118.                   permanent license; do not install the temporary
  119.                   license.
  120.  
  121.                 +o If you have received a permanent license, you
  122.                   should install it because it enables you to use
  123.                   the software that you have purchased.

  140.                 +o If concurrent licenses are used at your site and
  141.                   you plan to use an already-installed license, you
  142.                   can install and use the licensed software on your
  143.                   system without installing a license.
  144.  
  145.                 +o If you have received a temporary software license
  146.                   but do not need to use the software immediately,
  147.                   you may choose to wait to install a license until
  148.                   you obtain the permanent license.
  149.  
  150.          3.  Request a software license if you don't have a
  151.              software license at all, or if you have a temporary
  152.              license and need a permanent license.
  153.  
  154.              To obtain a software license, fill out the Software
  155.              License Registration card that was included with the
  156.              software (or the replica in the _F_L_E_X_l_m _E_n_d _U_s_e_r
  157.              _M_a_n_u_a_l).  Send the information or the card by
  158.              electronic mail (preferred), FAX, or mail to Silicon
  159.              Graphics License Administration or your local service
  160.              provider (see the next section for addresses).  After
  161.              your request is received by Silicon Graphics or your
  162.              local service provider, you should receive a software
  163.              license within two business days.

  165.          4.  Identify the system on which you will install the
  166.              software license.
  167.  
  168.              Because software license information usually must be
  169.              installed on a particular system, follow these
  170.              guidelines:
  171.  
  172.                 +o Use the /sbin/uname -n command to identify the
  173.                   system on which the license is intended to be
  174.                   used.
  175.  
  176.                 +o If the sysinfo is ``ANY,'' you can install the
  177.                   license on any system you choose.
  178.  
  179.                 +o If the host name included with the software
  180.                   license information doesn't match the host name
  181.                   of the system on which you want to install the
  182.                   license, contact Silicon Graphics License
  183.                   Administration.

  185.          5.  Install the software license (temporary or permanent).
  186.  
  187.              Check the ``license type'' listed in the software
  188.              license information to find out whether the license is
  189.              a node-locked license or a concurrent license.  The
  190.              installation procedure depends on the license type:

  206.                 +o If you are installing a node-locked license, use
  207.                   the _L_i_c_e_n_s_e_M_a_n_a_g_e_r(1M) tool.  You can bring up
  208.                   LicenseManager by choosing ``License Manager''
  209.                   from the System toolchest.

  211.                 +o If the license is a concurrent license, you may
  212.                   need to configure the system on which you plan to
  213.                   install the license as a license server.  (See
  214.                   Chapter 1 of the _F_L_E_X_l_m _E_n_d _U_s_e_r _M_a_n_u_a_l for more
  215.                   information about license servers.)

  217.          6.  Verify that the software license has been successfully
  218.              installed.
  219.  
  220.              To verify that the software license is working, try
  221.              running one of the licensed programs in RoboInst.  The
  222.              licensed programs are:  _r_o_b_o_i_n_s_t(1M).
  223.  
  224.              If you installed a temporary license and you are
  225.              entitled to a permanent license, replace the temporary
  226.              license with a permanent license as soon as possible
  227.              to ensure uninterrupted use of RoboInst.
  228.  
  229.        7.3  _C_o_n_t_a_c_t_i_n_g__S_i_l_i_c_o_n__G_r_a_p_h_i_c_s__L_i_c_e_n_s_e__A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_i_o_n
